MacHack is a great conference. For four days and three nights the conference goes full steam and lives on caffeine. During that time there are cutting edge sessions, helpful round-tables, way-cool papers, and some of the best networking this side of Cupertino. When the conference is over, the attendees brains are full, they have a couple of T-Shirts, some goodies, a copy of the proceedings, a great CD, and a hack that they stayed up all night writing.
Conference Overview
MacHack '98, the Thirteenth Annual Technical Conference for Leading Edge Developers will take place Wednesday, June 17 (midnight that starts Thursday) through Sunday, June 21, 1998 (Machine Room closes at 8 AM).
The Machine Rooms open late on Wednesday night, June 17th, for you to get started on your hack. There are sessions presented Thursday through Saturday.
The Hack Contest begins Friday at midnight and runs until all the hacks are shown. The Hack Awards are presented Saturday night at the annual banquet, followed by the Moovie (chairman’s choice), and ice cream social. As usual, the Machine Rooms close at 8AM Sunday morning.
These activities provide many opportunities for you to learn about the latest happenings in the developer community and meet the people making things happen. Imagine how useful that will be when you return home to create even more cool software.
Keynote
We're still waiting for the speaker's confirmation so we can't say any more now. Watch our web page or subscribe to our mail list to get more information as it becomes available.
Web Page
The MacHack conference tries to keep all of the latest and greatest information about MacHack on the web at http://www.machack.com. Be sure and check it out.
Mailing List
You can join the internet mailing list for MacHack by sending a message with the message content "SUBSCRIBE MACHACK-L email_address@foo.bar" to majordomo@machack.com. Then whenever a mailing on MacHack is going out, you will automatically receive it electronically.
Papers
The papers in 1997 were terrific! We're looking for 10 - 12 papers to be presented at MacHack '98. Papers can be on any topic of interest to Leading Edge developers. Topics can be philosophical, esoteric, practical, or anything in between. As before, accepted papers will be bound into a set of proceedings, and the authors will receive complimentary admission to MacHack. If you are interested in presenting a paper, or know someone who might be, send mail to machack-papers@machack.com.
Quick-Topics
With the great success of last year's Quick-Topics, we again are having a track of these mini-papers. Quick-Topics are 1 - 3 page papers of useful hints or information to increase development productivity. Quick-Topic presenters receive the standard speaker discount and have their papers published in the proceedings. If you are interested in presenting a Quick-Topic paper, or know someone who might be, send mail to machack-papers@machack.com.
Sessions
The heart of MacHack is the breadth of expertise that you, our speakers and attendees, bring and share at the general sessions. We are planning three solid tracks with possible spill-over into a fourth. With Rhapsody on the horizon, the focus will be hacking -- a new approach to new technologies -- as well as some truly useful topics for experts and novices alike. Programming will include issues ranging from general topics to meaty technical stuff.
General Topics. Sessions on GUI creation, coding practices, and other topics that are not new but have had significant developments in the last year.
Emerging Technologies. The specific topics of these sessions will be determined after Apple's World Wide Developer Conference and other spring announcements by a number of vendors. This way we can bring you a hands-on approach to the best of the new technologies.
Developer Tools. Most of the tools require updates and expansion. Here is a close look at Metrowerks, Symantec, and Apple development systems. This also includes debuggers and scripting systems.
MacOS. Sessions discuss critical new developments in the MacOS, and how you can take advantage of them. This is your chance to learn what Inside Mac doesn't tell you.
Other Platforms. Yes, we include other platforms.
Business. Sessions and more topics related to the business of software development.
Cross Platform. Sessions offer a look at tools and practices that will help you to create your software and sell it on several platforms.
Code Clinics. Having problems with your code? Bring it to one of the code clinics and have an expert help fix problems or pour soothing oil on your troubled code.
Any special requests for topics? Contact Expotech or send mail to machack-sessions@machack.com.
Special Stuff
MacHack will continue to bring you the best in conference amenities.
The Machine Room will be equipped with numerous Macintoshes and many other leading edge hardware and software innovations. (Anyone who would like to showcase their equipment or software here, please let us know and we will reserve space for you.)
The MacHax™ Group will again sponsor the famous Hack Contest.
Roundtables, code bashing, all night coding marathons, and other similar activities are all such an integral part of MacHack it seems redundant to mention them.
Useful Details
Last year we came very close to our limit of 300 attendees. It is the consensus of the conference committee that a great deal of the pleasure/charm/usefulness/intensity/ambience/whatever of the conference would be lost if MacHack grew beyond this level. We hope not to turn away anyone, so please call to confirm availability if you plan to drop in at the last minute.
